Awards & Scholarships

It all pays off!

Online students are eligible for many of the awards and scholarships that SLIS and other organizations offer. For example, online students have been the successful recipients of awards from professional associations, library associations, and their undergraduate institutions. Keep your eye out in your emails for scholarships and check the requirements, it might just be your ticket to your next conference!

SLIS Awards

Here are a list of scholarships that online SLIS students at the UofA are eligible for. ​Visit the SLIS awards page for the most up to date information. 


All SLIS Students

  • U of A Libraries June Newnham Memorial Graduate Award (to an entering student)

  • LIS Alumni Association (LISAA) Scholarship (typically to one entering and one continuing student; typically at least one is an on-campus student)

  • U of A Libraries Award (to a graduating student)

  • Jim Parker Memorial Scholarship (odd years only)

  • ** SLIS Student Travel Award

  • ** Michael Silver Memorial Travel Award

  • ** Knowledge Organization Travel Award

  • ** Any external awards from LAA, COPPUL, etc. (unless the external organization places a restriction on this, which is rare; most of these require applications)


On-campus only (but part-time students eligible):

  • Sarah Rebecca Reed Memorial Scholarship in LIS

  • Nominations for Dr. Bruce Bain Memorial Graduate Scholarship (Faculty of Education)

  • Nominations for Audrey and Jack Reid Graduate Scholarship (Faculty of Education)


Online only:

  • Award for Entering Online MLIS Students (to an entering student)

  • ** Award for Continuing Online MLIS Students

  • ** Award for Graduating Online MLIS Students (to a graduating student)


All graduates of our MLIS or combined degrees are also eligible to be nominated for membership of Beta Phi Mu, the international LIS honour society.
